Halmstad is a port, university, industrial and recreational city at the mouth of the Nissan River in the province of Halland on the Swedish west coast. Halmstad is the seat of Halmstad Municipality and the capital of Halland County. The city has a population of about 56,000, out of a municipal total of nearly 90,000.

A rural building, constructed in 1835. It has benefited from a recent refurbishment and restoration. The present church replaced a medieval one on the same site.

Europa and the Bull, Halmstad Attractions
The famous sculpture of Europa and the Bull lies at the heart of the fountain in Halmstad’s main square, Stora Torg. The sculpture was created in 1926. The sculptor Carl Milles won the competition to design the square’s centrepiece. It depicts the story, from Greeek mythology of Zeus, the king of the gods, disguised as a bull in order to carry away the princess he has fallen in love with, Europa.

Flygstaden Golf Club, Halmstad Attractions
A nine hole pay and play course that is open to all. There are three par four holes here and the rest are par three. The course lies a couple of kilometres to the west of Halmstad town centre.

Consistently been ranked as offering the best golf courses in Sweden, and one of the best in Europe outside the United Kingdom. The club has two fine, par seventy two courses, which have been used in major championships. It is one of the oldest clubs in Sweden, founded in the 1930s.

Halmstad Viewing Tower, Halmstad Attractions
Located in the heart of a lovely area of beach woodland, on Glagberget Hill. It is a charming turreted building that is actually inhabited, although the tower is open to visitors. The tower gives fabulous views over the town, which was established in medieval times, and on clear days, for many miles around.

Harplinge Windmill, Halmstad Attractions
One of the largest Dutch Windmills left standing in Northern Europe and is a key local landmark. It stands in the centre of the town, which is a few kilometres to the northwest of Halmstad. The windmill was built in 1895.

Haverdal Beach, Halmstad Attractions
A long, wide stretch of sand on the Kattegat coast. It is about three kilometres long in total. The beach is flanked by high sand dunes, which give shelter, and are great to stroll among.

Hertig Knut Sculpture, Halmstad Attractions
The statue of Hertig Knut stands near to the centre of Halmstad and is made of steel. It is a stylised figure shown riding a horse. The sculpture was made by Walter Bengtsson and erected in 1985. Hertig Knut lived in the fourteenth century and was the Duke of Halland.

Najaden Museum Ship, Halmstad Attractions
Ship lies in the harbour at Halmstad, next to the castle. It is a key landmark of the town. Constructed in the late nineteenth century, the ship is fitted out as it would have been in the early years of its activity.

Neptunus Sculpture, Halmstad Attractions
A dramatic five metre high sculpture that stands near the centre of Halmstad. It is named after Neptune, the god of the sea. The sculpture changes colour depending on the light conditions and the angle it is viewed from.

Nissadalen Golf Course, Halmstad Attractions
A nine hole pay and play facility, opened in 2002. It is a great place for families and less experienced golfers, though is likely to challenge players of most abilities. There are seven par threes, one par four and one par five here.

Oskarström RC Church, Halmstad Attractions
Opened in 1925, the Roman Catholic Church at Oskarström was the first Catholic Church opened in Halland since the Reformation. The religion had been largely supressed for centuries, and the church was partly built to serve an immigrant population. The church has a modest and unprepossessing exterior, in red and yellow tiling, and a simple yet dignified interior. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is also known as Saint Mary’s Church.

Östra Stranden Beach, Halmstad Attractions
A long and popular stretch of sand which is an ideal retreat during the bright summer months. The water here is particularly shallow, which makes it suitable for children.

Palmqvist Kiosk & Golf, Halmstad Attractions
A great family seaside attraction. Find two miniature golf courses here, each with eighteen holes. In addition there is an amusement arcade and a miniature motorcycle track. A bouncy castle adds to the fun for the little ones. There is a cafe-restaurant here where you can relax before or after the fun.

Prince Bertil’s Path, Halmstad Attractions
Runs thirteen kilometres between Halmstad Castle and Tylösand. It takes you through areas of natural beauty, and past areas of great historical interest.

Snöstorp Church, Halmstad Attractions
One of six hexagonal churches in Sweden, the church at Snöstorp, nowadays an eastern suburb of Halmstad, was completed in 1892.

Särdal Lifeboat Station, Halmstad Attractions
Built in 1908 and is no longer operational. It acts as a museum both of the local lifeboat service itself, and of the larger maritime community. the old lifeboat is on display here intact, along with a large number of pieces of fishing equipment and memorabilia associated with seafaring in the area.

Tjuvahålen Beach, Halmstad Attractions
Set in a small bay near to Tylösand. The small beach is an attractive, relatively sheltered spot, and is popular with families. From the rocky shoreline there is a bathing jetty that takes you out into the water.

Tylön, Halmstad Attractions
An island just off the coast within Halmstad municipality. It is now a nature reserve that supports populations of rare birds including eider and black guillemot. A lighthouse stands on the island, which is now unmanned. The island contains ancient remains, including Bronze Age cairns and two stone circles.
